Floods hit Laos as heavy rains continue

Flooding has affected at least 11 villages and more than 10,000 people in Savannakhet province in southern Laos, with three temporary shelters opened in Phin district, Lao local media reported.

The flooding has affected communities in Phin and Sepone districts, while officials have urged residents living near rivers and riverbanks to closely monitor rising water levels.

In neighboring Champasack province, the Mekong River at Pakse reached 11.52 meters on 19 August, exceeding the 11-meter alert level.

Flash flooding was also reported in coal-mining areas of Sekong province.

In northern Laos, heavy rain caused water to overflow in Nan district, Luang Prabang province, on 18-19 August, flooding paddy fields and affecting more than 20 families.

Heavy to very heavy rain is forecast across parts of Laos through 21 August, with authorities urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert for further flooding and possible flash floods.
